The story of Jastožera begins in the late 1883. In course of the Austro-Hungarian rule, the Italian customs officer who was employed here, decided to make the Jastožera, in order to breed lobsters. As he used the government money for the construction of the same, as misfortune would have it, he was soon brought to light and imprisoned. Thus the Jastožera became the property of Ivan Marinkovic, at that time one of the most famous architects and constructors of lighthouses on the island of Palagruža. At that time, Marinkovic carried out works on the Jastožera, he took the opportunity and bought it on auction. As the years passed by, Jastožera was finally allotted exclusively for storage of live lobsters for further sale. Lobsters were delivered there till 1962 from the area of Middle Dalmatia - islands of Lastovo, Mljet, Brac, Hvar, Drvenik, Šolta. From that place, before and after the 2nd World War, they were transported even by hydroplanes to various destinations Europe wide. According to the sources, in 1962 more than one ton of lobsters were stored in Jastožera. They were packed in wooden boxes made especially for that purpose filled with straw. According to legend, on one occasion the box with a live lobsters was returned from such a long journey. In 2002 the Jastožera was transformed into the catering establishment with rich offer of fish specialities and gourmand delicaties from Vis. There the food is not only need, but real passion and art, keeping old odours and tastes of the Mediterranean. Here the food is honored in an entirely special way - Mediterranean way. In the Seafood Restaurant "Jastožera" you can just enjoy the fresh sea "bites" which you chose when they still swim in the sea under your feet. With each food you orderd, you will hear its story, either history from its reception by the ancient world till our days or history of the basic composition of a particular food itself.
